ATB Financial
Agile product redesign for a business banking platform.
The Challenge
To accelerate a digital transformation, ATB brought in external design support to augment their internal teams. Along with two other Product Designers from Evans Hunt, I was embedded full-time with the ATB team for just over a year.
Our product team's mandate was to:
- Prototype and validate key features with ATB's research team (account overview, credit cards, money transfers, EFTs, address book, user permissions, 2FA).
- Partner with IBM's 40+ person development team on story grooming and feature development for a soft-launch.
- Establish a design system for ATB's business banking portfolio (components, patterns, documentation).
- Model best practices for ATB's emerging product and digital innovation teams.
Key Features
During the course of this work, I worked closely with the ATB product team and subject matter experts to outline requirements, prototype, and test a number of key features, including:
Account Overview
What does a banking homepage look like when the average user has 40+ accounts and 60+ credit cards?
Address Book
How might we consolidate contacts distributed across different banking services into a unified, searchable system?
Money Transfers / Recurring Payments
How can we simplify (and where possible, automate), the flow of money between accounts while handling complex business rules, legacy software constraints, and edge cases?
What I Learned
From EFTs to Interac e-transfers to recurring payments, I learned a lot about the current state of modern banking and financial systems while going deep with each of these features to design an intuitive experience.
The prototypes were some of the most complex I had ever built at the time (Sketch + Axure with desktop/mobile views, realistic user input, logical conditions and dynamic repeater tables) to simulate realistic banking scenarios.
During my year in banking, I learned that even in the most "boring" industries, there are still plenty of opportunities to go deep on the details and deliver meaningful work for customers.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of financial products and the banking industry, I cannot share any additional metrics or results.
